Janice: The friends are always running into Chandler’s ex with an unbearable voice and a penchant for yelling, “Oh. Eventually their age difference causes problems in the relationship. He and Monica date seriously on-and-off throughout the series. Richard Burke is a friend of Monica and Ross’ parents. Gunther: Gunther works at Central Perk and has a not-so-secret crush on Rachel. Ross and Rachel’s “will they or won’t they?” chemistry drives much of the show. But when Rachel reunites with the friends in the first episode, Ross’ life is a bit complicated: His pregnant wife has just left him for a woman. Yet since high school, Ross has had a crush on the popular Rachel (his sister’s best friend). A paleontologist, he obsesses over dinosaurs, grammar and documentaries. Ross Geller (David Schwimmer): Ross is probably the nerdiest of the group. An aspiring actor, he relies on best friend and roommate Chandler financially until he gets his big break on a soap opera. Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc): Though Joey isn’t the smartest of the gang-in fact, he’s incredibly dumb-he does do well with the ladies, wooing a new woman almost every episode. The self-described “funny one,” he cracks jokes and makes sarcastic observations whenever the friends are hanging out. None of the friends know what Chandler does for a living-something with numbers, maybe? Scarred by his parents’ divorce, Chandler has major commitment issues. When he moved to New York, he became roommates with Joey across the hall from Monica and Phoebe. Phoebe and Monica used to live together, but Phoebe has moved out by the time the show starts.Ĭhandler Bing (Matthew Perry): Chandler first met Ross in college when the two were roommates. (Her claim to fame is the song “Smelly Cat.”) Though she has a bleak past-Phoebe was homeless after her father abandoned the family and her mother committed suicide-she is relentlessly optimistic. "I'm going to spread the legs as wide as I can." To which Joey lets out a creepy laugh of approval at the blatant sexual innuendo.Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow): The oddball of the group, Phoebe is a professional masseuse and amateur musician. "Phoebe, you pull," Monica instructed in the flashback. Or when Joey got Monica's Thanksgiving turkey stuck on his head. "Also, I'm thankful for thong ," he added. Like when Joey says he's thankful for the fall breeze in New York City, because it blew "this chick's skirt right up." Outside the Monica-Chandler fiasco, there are a few other dishonourable mentions from the episode that I can't leave off. One pitch: Chandler goes to sensitivity training. Writing this now, I wonder what an episode of Friends would look like in 2018. And why there's still much more ground to cover. I can't deny that watching Friends in 2018 - through the lens of #MeToo, anti-bullying, body positivity, and my own feminist leanings - was an unexpected lesson in how far we've come as a society. The most brutal aspect, though, was all the body-shaming Monica was subjected to - from Chandler and her own parents - and why her reason to get healthy hinged on an insecure guy in an ugly suit.Īnd mind you, it was also revealed that Monica, who went on to become a professional chef, only did so because Chandler made an offhand comment after trying her macaroni and cheese. I can't even lie, I still died laughing at that part. Of course, it's lust at first sight for Chandler, even as Monica laughably blows it later by accidentally dropping a butcher's knife on Chandler's foot, cutting off his toe. So she puts on her sexiest dress to remind him what he missed out on. Chandler's Flock of Seagulls haircut itself was a complete travesty, but it's the fact that he proceeded to shade Monica about her weight from the second he met her that is hardest to relive.įlash forward to the Gellers' next Thanksgiving, a fit Monica is hellbent on getting revenge against Chandler. And it so happened to involve resident sass master Chandler Bing.Ī running gag in the show is that present-day Monica struggled with her weight as a younger woman, and on that fateful Thanksgiving, her brother Ross, then in college, brought Chandler, his roommate and lead singer of their band, home to spend Thanksgiving with the Geller family. To jog your memory, after enjoying Monica's Thanksgiving feast, the gang convinces her to share her worst Thanksgiving story. I cued it up on Netflix and settled in for a hilarious trip down memory lane, only to be surprised by how, now, watching as a adult in 2018, this episode is actually really cringeworthy. In the Season 5 episode, Monica ( Courteney Cox ), Ross ( David Schwimmer ), Rachel (J ennifer Aniston ), Phoebe ( Lisa Kudrow ), Joey ( Matt LeBlanc ) and Chandler ( Matthew Perry ) reflect on their worst Thanksgiving memories through some pretty iconic flashbacks from their younger years.
